University Study: Development of Predictive Bed Bug Management Strategies in the Western US

Washington State University study investigated the effectiveness of EcoVenger (EcoRaider) in controlling bed bugs, including those resistant to common insecticides like pyrethroids. Researchers tested EcoVenger on both susceptible lab strains and field-collected resistant bed bugs from Washington (WA), Oregon (OR), and Arizona (AZ).

EcoVenger effectiveness on resistant bed bugs study

Key Findings:
1. **High Efficacy**: EcoRaider achieved 100% mortality in susceptible bed bugs and 90% mortality in resistant WA populations within 24 hours when applied directly (topical application).
2. Residual Performance: In longer-term tests, EcoRaider remained effective when applied to surfaces. After two weeks, it still killed a significant portion of resistant bed bugs, though its potency slightly decreased over time.
3. Comparison to Chemical Insecticides: EcoRaider outperformed Temprid SC (a commercial insecticide) against resistant bed bugs. For example, Temprid SC had little effect on WA populations, while EcoRaider maintained high mortality rates.

Why It Matters:
- Resistance Problem: Many bed bugs in the Western U.S. have developed resistance to pyrethroids (a common insecticide class), making them harder to control. EcoRaider offers a promising alternative.
- Natural Solution: As a plant-based product, EcoRaider may be safer for indoor use compared to synthetic chemicals, though further studies on safety and environmental impact are needed.
- Integrated Pest Management: The study suggests EcoRaider could be combined with other methods to manage resistant bed bug infestations more effectively.

Limitations & Next Steps:
- The study focused on lab and limited field populations. Real-world conditions (e.g., furniture, clutter) might affect results.
- Long-term resistance to EcoRaider itself was not examined—bed bugs might adapt over time.
- Researchers recommend further testing in diverse settings and exploring EcoRaider’s use alongside other non-chemical strategies (e.g., heat treatment).

Bottom Line:

EcoRaider shows strong potential as a tool against resistant bed bugs, offering a natural and effective option for homeowners and pest control professionals.
